Six weeks after landing men on the moon, Americans take another giant leap for mankind with the nation’s first cash-spewing, automated teller machine. This also marked the last day that the banks every did anything convenient for the customer. The new device was the first in the United States to dispense cash using a mag-stripe card that didn’t require teller intervention. The machines were good for banks, too, eventually letting them cut costs, reduce teller lines and, of course, charge outrageous user fees. The outrageous user fees have been upsetting customers ever since.
